In the process, the barbecue has evolved to be one of those rare culinary arts, which require the use of special equipment.

Barbecue equipment consist primarily of the barbecue grill and the optional barbecue pit. Different kinds of barbecue grilles use different types of fuels, such as liquid propane, charcoal and wood. However, just as important as the barbecue cooking equipment are the accessories that are made available by several manufacturers. These are also referred to as barbecue tools.

Different classes of barbecue tools exist. Each tool is required for a specific kind of purpose. For example, special pieces of cutlery such as steak knives are provided. These knives are required for cutting toughened steak. Barbecue knives are different from ordinary knives. These knives are generally sharper than dinner knives and yet, are safe enough to be used at the dinner table. The spatula is a ladle-like tool that is used to handle the food being barbecued. Turning forks are often required for cooking in barbecue pits or over open fires. Many other kinds of equipment are available for use exclusively with barbecues.

These tools are available in the market today in sets. Buying a set of tools is often more economical than buying individual tools, but one should be careful enough to check whether all the pieces have been properly manufactured or not. The less expensive sets contain as less as only six pieces - the accessories that may be dubbed as the bare essentials in a barbecue. Larger sets contain as many as twenty to thirty pieces, with multiple sets of barbecue knives, turning forks of different sizes, and also different kinds of spatula. Some barbecue sets even provide stove tops.
